Dry-Lining Explained: First and Second Fix

Dry-lining is a fast, clean method of finishing internal walls and ceilings. Understanding the stages helps you plan both residential and commercial projects.
What is dry-lining?
Dry-lining uses plasterboard and, where applicable, metal stud partitions to form and finish internal walls and ceilings without traditional wet plaster, giving a smooth, ready-to-finish surface.
First fix versus second fix
First-fix dry-lining covers framing, boarding and partition installation. Second-fix dry-lining covers finishing the boards ready for decoration. Both stages need to be done to a consistent standard.
- First fix: framing, boarding, partitions
- Second fix: finishing ready for decoration
- Plasterboard installation
- Metal stud partitions where applicable
Working from drawings
On commercial projects, dry-lining is often carried out from drawings and specifications, which is why reliable, experienced operatives matter.
